Idaho Software Development Since 1980

From development, sprints to wireframes, and everything-in-between.

A lot has changed from the days of calling this Computer Programming but times do change.  Both being essentially the same effort and responsibilities but has changed not just in context but in procedures and methodology used to scope the work out.

Idaho Flag

Some information I know about Idaho is I believe the state was admitted or ratified to the United States around or about 'July 3, 1890'.  Idaho is located around latitude '44.068203' and longitude of '-114.742043' and has a population of roughly '1,839,106 million'.  If I remember correctly the capital is 'Boise' and the largest city is 'Boise'.

I assisted Galey and Lord, Inc.  out of Georgia when they had the need to create software around their manufacturing wage pricing system.  G&L would pay their employees based on the fastest line worker on a given machine.  They would sit there and count the employees 'head scrath', 'every time they bent down', 'every time they moved'.  This was called a 'Time and Motion' study which was a critical part of their pay system.  Each employee was tracked and compared to the same machine's fastest employee.  This was a boilerplate for everyone's pay on that given machine.  Perodically they would re-confirm the 'Time and Motion' studies.

"The software works great and the client is pleased with your work."

So software development is still the creation of code through a disciplined process of the developer writing the code towards a solutioned set of functionality.  While we as developers always thought of the user through the process it is now called Personas.  A Persona is where one takes the role and mindset around that workers responsibility and builds it with them in mind.  I know sounds a lot like thinking of the user right?  Yep, it sure does.  It is a little more involved but that is still the jist of it.

The Development Environment

The software developer still utilizes a place to put the code but instead of putting it in a shared folder we put the code in systems like GitHub where branches are created around the versioning of major, minor relatively speaking.  These are referred to in Agile as releases and often called release branches when it comes to the code repositories.

If at any point you decide to reach to me just know the area codes I am familiar with for Idaho are '208, 986'.  For Software Development assistance you will find my rates very reasonable for Idaho.  Now just keep in mind my time zone is 'Eastern Standard Time (EST)' and I know the time zones in Idaho are 'Most of the state: Mountain Standard Time (MST)' in case you wish to call me.  Anyway let me continue.

Comments/Documentation

Not every developer is good at commenting their code.  It is a habit well worth being formed.  Not only from the standpoint of code commenting but in documentation.  The format of this documentation is refered to as Markup.  Markup files have a different extension and method of creation of the documentation.  Often times now though we find the Markup creation is a separate role.

Test-Driven Development

Testing code today comes first through Unit Testing and then the Testing Group will take the code and run their own tests on the code.  The Testing Group is often called QA for Quality Assurance.  QA often times will perform Regression Testing as well as 'A/B' tests and more.  I personally do not like the role of QA for myself I would rather code.  The QA role requires a different person with discipline and dilligence that often software developers do not have.  QA needs a 'Leave No Stone Unturned' mentality and typically do a better job writing test scripts etc.  If code fails QA it is rolled back to the Developer as exceptions which need to be resolved.  Often times called Defects which used to be called Bugs but as time goes on terminology just seems to change sometimes for no apparent reason.

You know, I don't make it out to Idaho much but I would like to see the 'Mountain Bluebird' state bird.  I am a little familiar with the Idaho 'Syringa' state flower as well.  However, I do not know much about Idaho's state tree the 'Western White Pine'.  Fishing is fun to me perhaps I would like reeling in the Idaho 'Cutthroat Trout' state fish.  Anyway, sorry I went off topic.  Let me continue.

My Programming Expertise

Now that you have a better feel for how professional programming is done, you might wonder what my areas of expertise include.  My main areas are:

  1. .NET Framework (Microsoft's Technology)
  2. Microsft C# (all versions)
  3. Microsoft Visual Basic (All versions)
  4. Microsoft Web Development (ASP.net)
  5. Microsoft SQL Server (Transact SQL)
  6. Web Javascript / jQuery / Bootstrap
