Kentucky Database Development

Develop a strategy for effective data management and storage.

What exactly is involved with database development, and what's my approach to it?  I first touched database development with dBase in 1989.  Before I dive into that, let's review my areas of expertise, with regards to my database consulting and database development services.

Kentucky Customers

Kentucky Flag

Some information I know about Kentucky is I believe the state was admitted or ratified to the United States around or about 'June 1, 1792'.  Kentucky is located around latitude '37.839333' and longitude of '-84.27002' and has a population of roughly '4,505,836 million'.  If I remember correctly the capital is 'Frankfort' and the largest city is 'Louisville'.

Areas of Database Development Expertise

It seems like a new database comes along every day.  I prefer to stick with the ones I know best

Word of Mouth

Take a moment to read related case studies and testimonials below around my experience with Database Development.

Case Study

Let's talk drug manufacturing for a minute and Banner Pharmacaps.  Banner hired me to govern all Visual Studio .Net development for migrations from VB.Net to C# as well as all new windows and web developmentBanner had me write a capsule seam check application to communicate to a $70,000 OGP microscope to monitor gel cap seams to help eliminate production issues for leakers etc.

Eddie worked with the Banner Validation department to ensure all CGMPs / GxP / GAP Analysis, reporting, GAMP5 and GMP FDA understanding and compliance was met.  He even implemented Banners first SDLC document system to assist in proper documentation.

"Eddie was a pleasure to work with.  He is very knowledgeable and a very patient professional."

When Syngenta needed software for their crop protection division, they looked to me to deliver a system that updated sales territories on a data warehousing system built by Robin Hooker.  I delivered a Visual Basic 6.0 framework to ensure all sales territories mapped back to correct postal zip codes and across custom geographic coverages.

"Eddie is great at writing processes that are reusable.  He was always looking for ways to improve processes."

I have assisted such banking giants as Wells Fargo (Wachovia) and Bank of America in highly visible projects up to an 11 billion dollar Asset Management Package where I was assigned to the project where he led as the Lead Developer Architect, Project Manager and Business Analyst.  After throwing me to the wolves in banking and the success we had other banking clients such as Bank of America jumped at the opportunity to have us assist them.

"Jimmy's users are pleased with the RECMTMS application and reports.  Excellent news as always."

Triad Guaranty

Case Study

When Triad Guaranty needed a Risk Based reporting system, I assisted by writing a solution in Perl/CGI under Apache running on Linux.  The resulting system made the newspapers as the first PMI (Primary Mortgage Company) to allow their loan partners to view Risk Based information.

I also wrote an Oracle Blob based Document Management System for Triad Guaranty for pickup and storage of their EDI Fannie and Freddie files saving Triad over $50,000 from the canned software solutions they were reviewing.

Here's where the REAL INGENUITY came in.  ->  I wrote the Oracle database blobs in a way that even Oracle forms and Oracle Reports couldn't extract the blob files and they work outside the Visual Basic software that I created to access them.  Puzzling every Oracle developer who attempted to test reading their first blob.  How did I do it?  I removed the EOF terminators prior to saving to the blob and simply put the EOF terminators back when my software extracted them to disk.

"We received a message this morning that the Appworx_prod oracle production box was low on disk space.  Eddie's program EZ-mon has turned out to be very helpful."

Case Study

My start in the food industry started when we wrote software for Nabisco to manage from a marketing perspective how they stacked up to the competition.  Critical to this was the ability to monitor competition.  I was given the daunting task of writing a system to monitor at the product and geographical level what competitors were doing with existing product and new product.

I delivered CATS (Competitive Activity Tracking System) which allowed Nabisco and Planters & Life Savers divisions to keep abreast of competitor changes in the market place.  This competitive advantage was unheard of in the industry.  I cannot disclose how competitive information is gathered in the field but the final system, included actual pre-release product images from actual competitor bagged product, competitor price sheets and more.

I also assisted in implementation of IRI Customer Sales syndicated data for in-house processing (savings in excess of $2 million) which the company was utilizing for competitor information as well by loading the IRI data for easy distribution to the entire organization.  This data combined with CATS made for a competitive arsenal still unmatched since 1991.

"Great work Eddie!  Clearly the whole company is benefiting from your VB expertise and your continuous sharing of routines you have developed through Townhall."

I almost always develop database systems using one or more of the following technologies:

  1. Microsoft SQL Server (Transact SQL - TSQL) (all versions)
  2. Oracle (PL/SQL)
  3. MySQL
  4. Microsoft Access (all versions)
  5. Visual FoxPro / FoxPro for DOS
  6. DB2
  7. dBase

What's a Database?

A database management system (known as a "DBMS") is a set of computer programs that controls the creation, maintenance and storage of data.  Sure, it does a lot more than that, but that's the main purpose of a database, in a nutshell.  For smaller applications, Microsoft Access or FoxPro may be used.  For larger applications, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL might be used.  For those in-between projects, something like Visual FoxPro is popular.

When I talk about database development, I am talking about defining, designing, developing and deploying a complete database solution.  It involves the front-end (user interface) of the system, and it involves the back-end (database, other tiers).  My point is, I am not just creating tables here.  I am designing and building an entire database-centric application.  That's why they call it a database management system.

If at any point you decide to reach to me just know the area codes I am familiar with for Kentucky are '270, 364, 502, 606, 859'.  For Database Development assistance you will find my rates very reasonable for Kentucky.  Now just keep in mind my time zone is 'Eastern Standard Time (EST)' and I know the time zones in Kentucky are 'Western half of the state: Central Standard Time (CST) / Eastern half of the state: Eastern Standard Time (EST)' in case you wish to call me.  Anyway let me continue.

My Philosophy

For a database management system to be considered professional, it needs to have certain characteristics.  What might some of those characteristics be, you ask?  Here they are:

Data Integrity

For your database to be useful, it is going to have to be complete.  Your business rules are going to have to be enforced throughout the system, and required data must be filled in.  I am talking about data integrity.  So, my first goal is to make sure good data makes it into the system, and stays that way.

Secure

As database developers, our job as developers is to make sure that it is being safeguarded.  Sure, logins help.  But security goes a lot further than creating a login screen.  For example, each application should have varying levels of security or roles.  That way only certain people can delete records or make bulk changes.  Security also means making sure the system isn't structured in a way that outsiders can easily compromise it.  You need to focus on security from day one.

Speed

The speed and responsiveness of a system play a major role in its acceptance.  It's one of the first impressions a user makes about a system.  Sometimes hardware has an impact on performance, but usually it has to do with how a system is designed.   For database systems, it usually comes down to one of two things.  Either the system is requesting way too much data, or indexes are being used incorrectly or not at all.

You know, I don't make it out to Kentucky much but I would like to see the 'Cardinal' state bird.  I am a little familiar with the Kentucky 'Goldenrod' state flower as well.  However, I do not know much about Kentucky's state tree the 'Yellow Poplar'.  Fishing is fun to me perhaps I would like reeling in the Kentucky 'Kentucky (spotted) bass' state fish.  Anyway, sorry I went off topic.  Let me continue.

User-Friendly / Intuitive

What does it mean to be user-friendly?  To us a user-friendly application feels like it was designed just for me.  The person or company who developed it understood precisely how I am going to use it.  It fits like a good glove.  That's user-friendly.  To be intuitive, the application also needs to hide complexity.  If you need a 200-page manual to figure something out, in most cases that isn't user-friendly or intuitive.

To create a successful database management system you really need all of the above, so those are the major areas I focus on throughout every aspect of my database consulting services.

Need Assistance?

Ever have an idea about a product or service but lack the ability to develop that idea?  Are you looking for a reliable person/firm to build your software?  Perhaps you are in need of someone to manage projects and teams?
