Louisiana Computer Programming Since 1980

Design, build, deliver and support innovative solutions.

I started computer programming that of someone who was a programmer telling a computer what to do.  I started programmin in 1980 on an Apple II and Atari Commodore 64 computers.  Saving data in those days was to a cassette tape.  Today things are much different being more web-based interfaces.  It's pretty easy to build a website, download a free development tool, and call yourself a programmer.  There's a world of difference between someone who just picked up "The Idiot's Guide to Computer Programming" and a professional, and that is sort of the purpose of this page.  I want to give you the knowledge to be able to tell the two apart.

Louisiana Flag

Some information I know about Louisiana is I believe the state was admitted or ratified to the United States around or about 'April 30, 1812'.  Louisiana is located around latitude '30.39183' and longitude of '-92.329102' and has a population of roughly '4,657,757 million'.  If I remember correctly the capital is 'Baton Rouge' and the largest city is 'New Orleans'.

What exactly is "computer programming", anyway?  Of course, it is the process of writing computer code (i.e.  programming, coding), with the result being a functioning (hopefully) software application.  But if you are going to do it correctly, you need to do a lot more than coding.

Case Study

ScanOnline hired me to manage manufacturing and government software development for small clients to large clients like the FBI and Executive Offices of the Whitehouse.  NTI Solutions was a subsidiary of ScanOnline selling QuarterMaster software at the time for asset management.  Many federal agencies used Quartermaster to manage checkout of assets whereas the Whitehouse utilized it to manage furniture for events.

"Eddie had respect and faith in his developers to perform their jobs with the best of their abilities.  Eddie was always willing to offer his assistance and had an excellent rapport with the companys customer base.  He was always available to answer any questions or help with any issues that would arise.  His management style was unique in that he let developers have a sense of control."

When the GTA (Greensboro Transit Authority) which also operates Access GSO, a door-to-door and curb-to-curb paratransit service for passengers with disabilities needed a questionnaire system for their patrons they asked me if I could help since I had previously assisted the Parks and Recreation department.  The resulting SCAT (Specialized Community Area Transportation) questionnaire system gave them a way to record questionnaires into a system for reporting and analysis.

"Eddie, the SCAT questionnaire system you created has really helped our department.  Thank you!"

Gilbarco needed a way to interface IBM Mainframe database information and pre-build green screens to a Windows layout.  I screen scraped every mainframe screen utilizing a HLLAPI and Visual Basic 5.0 which dynamically created desktop Windows screens.  Therefore, one mainframe codebase with a new Windows front end.

Case Study

My start in the food industry started when we wrote software for Nabisco to manage from a marketing perspective how they stacked up to the competition.  Critical to this was the ability to monitor competition.  I was given the daunting task of writing a system to monitor at the product and geographical level what competitors were doing with existing product and new product.

I delivered CATS (Competitive Activity Tracking System) which allowed Nabisco and Planters & Life Savers divisions to keep abreast of competitor changes in the market place.  This competitive advantage was unheard of in the industry.  I cannot disclose how competitive information is gathered in the field but the final system, included actual pre-release product images from actual competitor bagged product, competitor price sheets and more.

I also assisted in implementation of IRI Customer Sales syndicated data for in-house processing (savings in excess of $2 million) which the company was utilizing for competitor information as well by loading the IRI data for easy distribution to the entire organization.  This data combined with CATS made for a competitive arsenal still unmatched since 1991.

"Great work Eddie!  Clearly the whole company is benefiting from your VB expertise and your continuous sharing of routines you have developed through Townhall."

If at any point you decide to reach to me just know the area codes I am familiar with for Louisiana are '225, 318, 337, 504, 985'.  For Computer Programming assistance you will find my rates very reasonable for Louisiana.  Now just keep in mind my time zone is 'Eastern Standard Time (EST)' and I know the time zones in Louisiana are 'Central Standard Time (CST)' in case you wish to call me.  Anyway let me continue.

Let's take a look at the steps I take to be considered a professional computer programming company:

The Development Environment

The way a programmer structures his or her development environment says a lot about them.  Often times, new developers will keep one (and only one) copy of the source code on their local computer.  There are serious problems with this approach.  For starters they are a system crash away from disaster.  But there are other issues, too.  If you don't use a repository, you can't really do team programming properly.  You can't unit test your applications effectively either.

Comments/Documentation

I can usually tell a lot about a programmer by looking at their source code.  It doesn't matter what language being used, or if I even understand the code.  A professional programmer will write comments throughout the source code, explaining its purpose, clarifying tricky sections, and logging changes.  Without comments the source code is almost impossible to maintain.

Test-Driven Development

In the olden days (1980's and early 1990's) we used to write some code, compile it, and then run it, spot-checking for problems.  Trust me, programmers make the worst testers.  They know how the system works (they created it) so they know what buttons to press, and what buttons not to press.  It was the tester's job to find the problems.  Now the programmer has to go back and revisit the code.  They may have forgotten exactly why they coded it a certain way, and now they spend two, three, even four times longer fixing the problem.  The bug could have been fixed in minutes - even seconds, had they caught the problem immediately.

That's why test-driven development makes sense.  The sooner you identify the problem, the faster and less expensive it is to resolve.  You also avoid needless effort, such as when QA has to log bug reports, documenting everything to the letter.  It's wasted effort I should avoid.

You know, I don't make it out to Louisiana much but I would like to see the 'Eastern Brown Pelican' state bird.  I am a little familiar with the Louisiana 'Magnolia' state flower as well.  However, I do not know much about Louisiana's state tree the 'Baldcypress'.  Fishing is fun to me perhaps I would like reeling in the Louisiana 'White perch' state fish.  Anyway, sorry I went off topic.  Let me continue.

My Legacy Programming Expertise

Now that I have severely dated myself you can see I have the legacy tools background which I can still assist in.  My legacy main areas are:

  1. Microsoft Classic ASP (web)
  2. Microsoft Visual Basic 1.0 - 6.0
  3. Microsoft QuickBasic (ever version)
  4. Microsoft Professional Development System Basic (PD7)
  5. Data General Basic (MV2000 and up)
  6. Microsoft Access (every version)
  7. ActiveX Custom Development (components)

Need Assistance?

Ever have an idea about a product or service but lack the ability to develop that idea?  Are you looking for a reliable person/firm to build your software?  Perhaps you are in need of someone to manage projects and teams?
