Take a gander at any grocery store and see how many brands and the diversity of the products. Even different is their packaging. Every think of who makes the decisions of what items to carry? Which shelf to put the items or proximity to other related categories? Like beauty or pharmaceutical products for instance.
Mississippi Customers

Some information I know about Mississippi is I believe the state was admitted or ratified to the United States around or about 'December 10, 1817'. Mississippi is located around latitude '33' and longitude of '-90' and has a population of roughly '2,961,279 million'. If I remember correctly the capital is 'Jackson' and the largest city is 'Jackson'.
How about coupon redemption or BOGO (Buy one get one free) marketing? How does one attract customers to the aisles and what products sell the best at the registers? This and seasonal aspects of marketing and product placement all have to happen.

My start in the food industry started when we wrote software for Nabisco to manage from a marketing perspective how they stacked up to the competition. Critical to this was the ability to monitor competition. I was given the daunting task of writing a system to monitor at the product and geographical level what competitors were doing with existing product and new product.
I delivered CATS (Competitive Activity Tracking System) which allowed Nabisco and Planters & Life Savers divisions to keep abreast of competitor changes in the market place. This competitive advantage was unheard of in the industry. I cannot disclose how competitive information is gathered in the field but the final system, included actual pre-release product images from actual competitor bagged product, competitor price sheets and more.
I also assisted in implementation of IRI Customer Sales syndicated data for in-house processing (savings in excess of $2 million) which the company was utilizing for competitor information as well by loading the IRI data for easy distribution to the entire organization. This data combined with CATS made for a competitive arsenal still unmatched since 1991.
"Great work Eddie! Clearly the whole company is benefiting from your VB expertise and your continuous sharing of routines you have developed through Townhall."

The food industry is the complex network of farmers and diverse businesses that together supply much of the food consumed by the world population. Although there is no formal definition for the term, the food industry covers all aspects of food production and sale. It includes such areas as the raising of crops and livestock, manufacture of farm equipment and agrochemicals, food processing, packaging and labeling, storage, distribution, regulatory frameworks, financing, marketing, retailing, catering, research and development, and education.
If at any point you decide to reach to me just know the area codes I am familiar with for Mississippi are '228, 601, 662, 769'. For Food assistance you will find my rates very reasonable for Mississippi. Now just keep in mind my time zone is 'Eastern Standard Time (EST)' and I know the time zones in Mississippi are 'Central Standard Time (CST)' in case you wish to call me. Anyway let me continue.
Does Food and Agriculture Go Hand in Hand?
Agriculture is the process of producing food, feed, fiber and other desired products by the cultivation of certain plants and the raising of domesticated animals (livestock). The practice of agriculture is also known as "farming." In addition, scientists, engineers, inventors, and others devoted to improving farming methods and implements are also said to be engaged in agriculture. More people in the world are involved in agriculture as their primary economic activity than in any other, yet it only accounts for four percent of the world's GDP.
What is Land Sustainability?
I want to touch on conservation in agriculture which is vital to maintain the productivity and sustainability of America's working and non-working lands. The USDA and other organizations are available to help improve and preserve natural resources which can in turn positively impact the profitability of operations.
What is Food Preservation?
Food preservation includes food processing practices which prevent the growth of microorganisms, such as yeasts (although some methods work by introducing benign bacteria or fungi to the food), and slow the oxidation of fats that cause rancidity. Food preservation may also include processes that inhibit visual deterioration, such as the enzymatic browning reaction in apples after they are cut during food preparation. By preserving food, food waste can be reduced, which is an important way to decrease production costs and increase the efficiency of food systems, improve food security and nutrition and contribute towards environmental sustainability.
What is Food Processing?
Food processing is the methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into food for human consumption. Food processing takes clean, harvested or slaughtered and butchered components and uses them to produce marketable food products.
What is Food Distribution?
A vast global transportation network is required by the food industry in order to connect its numerous parts. These include suppliers, manufacturers, warehousing, retailers and the end consumers. There are also those companies that, during the food processing process, add vitamins, minerals, and other necessary requirements usually lost during preparation.
What is Retail?
With populations around the world concentrating in urban areas, food buying is increasingly removed from all aspects food production. This is a relatively recent development, taking place mainly over the last 50 years. The supermarket is a defining retail element of the food industry, where tens of thousands of products are gathered in one location, in continuous, year-round supply. Food preparation is another area where change in recent decades has been dramatic. Today, two food industry sectors are in apparent competition for the retail food dollar. The grocery industry sell fresh and largely raw products for consumers to use as ingredients in home cooking. The food service industry offers prepared food, either as finished products, or as partially prepared components for final "assembly."
What re Food Industry Technologies?
Sophisticated technologies define modern food production. They include many areas. Agricultural machinery, originally led by the tractor, has practically eliminated human labor in many areas of production. Biotechnology is driving much change, in areas as diverse as agrichemicals, plant breeding, and food processing. Many other areas of technology are also involved, to the point where it is hard to find an area that does not have a direct impact on the food industry. Computer technology is also a central force, with computer networks and specialized software providing the support infrastructure to allow global movement of the myriad components involved.
How does Marketing Marketing Work?
As consumers grow increasingly removed from food production, the role of product creation, advertising, publicity become the primary vehicles for information about food. With processed food as the dominant category, marketers have almost infinite possibilities in product creation.
You know, I don't make it out to Mississippi much but I would like to see the 'Mockingbird' state bird. I am a little familiar with the Mississippi 'Magnolia' state flower as well. However, I do not know much about Mississippi's state tree the 'Southern Magnolia'. Fishing is fun to me perhaps I would like reeling in the Mississippi 'Largemouth Bass' state fish. Anyway, sorry I went off topic. Let me continue.
What are the Regulations?
Regulation corresponds to the legal terms and restrictions imposed by government authority. Examples of regulation in the food industry include attempts to control such aspects as: standards of production, storage, and distribution; prices; wages; pollution effects; and qualifications and guarantees of employment.
Are there Labor and Education Needs?
Until the last 100 years, agriculture was labor intensive. Farming was a common occupation. Food production flowed from millions of farms. Farmers, largely trained from generation to generation, carried on the family business. That situation has changed dramatically. In North America, over 50 percent of the population were farm families only a few decades ago; now, that figure is around 1-2 percent, and some 80 percent of the population lives in cities. The food industry as a complex whole requires an incredibly wide range of skills. Several hundred occupation types exist within the food industry all with their own education needs.
What are some Facets of Research and Development?
Research in agricultural and food processing technologies happens in great part in university research environments. Projects are often funded by companies from the food industry. There is therefore a direct relationship between the academic and commercial sectors, as far as scientific research.
