Chapter

Jesus wept. [35]   The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! [36]   But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die? [37]   Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. [38]   Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been 'dead' four days. [39]   Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God? [40]   So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me. [41]   And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me. [42]   And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. [43]   He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. [44]   Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him. [45]   But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. [46]

The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs. [47]   If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. [48]   But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, [49]   nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. [50]   Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; [51]   and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad. [52]   So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death. [53]   Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples. [54]   Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves. [55]   They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast? [56]   Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him. [57]

Chapter

Jesus therefore said unto them, Yet a little while is the light among you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness overtake you not: and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. [35]

While ye have the light, believe on the light, that ye may become sons of light. These things spake Jesus, and he departed and hid himself from them. [36]   But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: [37]   that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? [38]   For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again, [39]   He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart; Lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, And should turn, And I should heal them. [40]   These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory; and he spake of him. [41]   Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess 'it', lest they should be put out of the synagogue: [42]   for they loved the glory 'that is' of men more than the glory 'that is' of God. [43]   And Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. [44]   And he that beholdeth me beholdeth him that sent me. [45]   I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness. [46]   And if any man hear my sayings, and keep them not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. [47]   He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day. [48]

For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. [49]   And I know that his commandment is life eternal: the things therefore which I speak, even as the Father hath said unto me, so I speak. [50]

Chapter

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. [35]   Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow now; but thou shalt follow afterwards. [36]   Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee. [37]   Jesus answereth, Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. [38]

Chapter

Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? [35]   Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. [36]   Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. [37]   Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him. [38]

But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? [39]   They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.) [40]

Chapter

And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe. [35]   For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. [36]   And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. [37]   And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave 'him' leave. He came therefore, and took away his body. [38]   And there came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. [39]   So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. [40]   Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb wherein was never man yet laid. [41]   There then because of the Jews' Preparation (for the tomb was nigh at hand) they laid Jesus. [42]
